The Elements of Front Body Opening

Front body opening is imperative to back body bending. In class this month we've been highlighting postures that strengthen the back body (such as cobra, sphinx, chair) and those that open the front of the body (Hero's, sphinx, upward dog) in an effort to help you work with where you are to safely and efficiently develop shapes in the body that resemble heart opening or backbends.

Some classes have even moved you to try those more engaged back bends such as Full Wheel. And some have helped you to explore opening the front of the body and engaging back body, helping you to explore the mechanics involved in moving the spine in these ways.

February is the month of Love.  As you may already be aware, we are focusing this month on Anahata or the Heart Chakra.  We are celebrating the heart by doing poses that focus on front body opening and back bends.  As we take our focus of self care to the heart, the Niyama of Santosha comes to mind.

Just about 5 years ago in a New Years flow at our studio, I set a Sankalpa.

Lying on my back preparing for class that day, I snuck a peek at the intention words on our ceiling lights. At the time, I was tired, my body and mind were stressed. I found myself in a job that was tearing at my heart strings, relationships that were disingenuous, and a life that seemed to be moving on its own without me in it.

As we often do in those moments, I was desperately searching for something outside of myself- God, The Universe, My husband, my boss..someone to swoop in and save the day, save me, make my life easier,

When I spotted the word Bliss.

Yogis typically accept and even embrace differences. Therefore, we need to consider these guidelines as suggestions and interpret them ourselves and determine what they mean to us as individuals.
